The Wilsons Difference
RECIPES DESIGNED BY TOP NUTRITIONISTS
The Cold Press process itself brings a number of benefits, however, at Wilsons we are mindful that a well-rounded product needs good quality ingredients and a well-balanced, nutritional recipe.
We have worked with top nutritionists specialising in Cold Press products who have, based on scientific studies, created a complete dog food with all 6 of the major nutrient groups:
Carbohydrate | Protein | Fat | Vitamins | Minerals | Water
The above nutrients are required to provide energy and ensure the physiological wellbeing of your dog.
We have designed our recipes around the following nutritional breakdown, optimised for a domestic pet undertaking periods of light work:
- 26% CRUDE PROTEIN – The Cold Press process ensures that this is good quality, highly digestible protein with high levels of absorption. We have restricted protein levels to around 26% in our products as this is optimal for domestic dogs undertaking periods of light work. Higher protein levels are only appropriate for very active working or sports dogs and can in fact be harmful to inactive dogs with excessive levels of protein resulting in gout or kidney stones.
- 14% CRUDE FAT – Achieving the appropriate balance of Fat and Protein in a complete dog food is necessary to ensure the dog has enough energy while not suffering with complications. We have selected this level of crude fat to provide enough energy while avoiding the cardiovascular complications that would arise from a high fat diet.
- 2.5% CRUDE FIBRE – Appropriate level of fibre to aid the creation of well-formed stools.
- 7% RAW ASH – This low level of indigestible, inorganic material indicates the quality of the raw ingredients being used and the benefits from the Cold Press technique which does not result in further degradation of these raw ingredients.
- 8% MOISTURE
Achieving a good balance of vitamins/minerals is also important and we have ensured that our product adheres to the “golden ratio” for 1 part Phosphorous to 2 parts Calcium to aid bone development. The Cold Press technique has also allowed us to incorporate super foods which provide additional vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, including Seaweed, Ginger, Tumeric, Thyme, Cranberry, Dandelion Root and Merry Gold Yellow.
Starch is an essential part of a balanced diet. The domestic dog has evolved/adapted to a starch rich diet but is only able to digest cooked starch. We pre-cook all our starch to break down the cell walls and aid digestion.
An important trend in today’s market is the prevalence of “Grain Free” foods, with key emphasis on the removal of Wheat Gluten from products. We have designed two of our products to be completely grain free with our other product using a low allergenicity grain, brown rice.
